Buy Windows 10 License

It is essential that you link your Microsoft account to the Windows 11 license on your device. Linking your Microsoft account with your digital license enables you to reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter whenever you make a significant hardware change.

Digital licenses are associated with your hardware and linked to your Microsoft account, so there's nothing you need to find on your PC. You're all set once your PC is connected to the internet and you log in to your Microsoft account.

If you are installing Windows on a new device or motherboard for the first time and you do not have a product key, select I don't have a product key during the installation setup screens. When prompted, enter the Microsoft account you want to use to purchase a digital license for this device. Once the setup screens are completed and Windows has finished installing, go to activation settings: Select the Start button, and then select Settings > System > Activation . Then select Open Store to purchase a digital license to activate Windows.

Make sure you associate your Microsoft account to your digital license to prepare for hardware changes. The association enables you to reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter if you make a significant hardware change later. For more info, see Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.

If you have an old, retail (non-OEM) copy of Windows 7, 8 or 10 you are no longer using on another PC, you can likely use the product key when you do a fresh install of Windows on your new PC. However, you must first make sure it's deactivated on the old PC it came from. See our article on how to transfer a Windows 10 or 11 license to a new PC for step-by-step information on how to retrieve and move your key.

The process of transferring a Windows license varies, depending upon whether you have digital or non-digital license. With a the former, you'll need to log into your Microsoft account to deactivate the old PC. And with the latter, you'll want to use a command line command to terminate the activation.

Microsoft is expected to stop selling license keys for Windows 10 at the end of January 2023. According to the official product pages (via PCWorld), January 31, 2023, will be the last day to purchase and download Windows 10 Pro, Workstation, and Home.

In the same way, if you plan to upgrade from an older version of Windows, you still can use a Windows 7 and even a Windows 8.1 product key to activate Windows 10. Of course, as long as you first erase the old installation to free up the license.

On the other hand, if you have a retail version of Windows, which you purchased separately from the computer, then you can transfer the license as long as you first erase the old installation to free up the license.

Despite Windows 10 being one of the most appreciated operating systems, its lifetime is slowly, but surely, coming to an end. Microsoft has set January 31, 2023, as the last day Windows 10 license keys are offered for sale. After that, you cannot purchase Windows 10 Home, Pro, and Workstation through the Microsoft website.

The Windows 7 or Windows 8 product keys that commonly work for this method are the retail and OEM varieties. Only sporadic success has been reported for volume license keys (i.e., enterprise or educational licenses) working with this loophole.

License types are different than operating system versions. They dictate what you can do with the software, while OS versions are distinguished by the features available. Multiple Windows license types exist, but the two commonly available to a home user are the retail and OEM varieties.

In that latter camp are a number of community colleges, and they often make the Windows 10 license free or supremely affordable (usually $15). The catch: You have to sign up for at least one course to qualify for campus discounts.

Still, this means that unless Microsoft has a change of heart and backtracks, the only way to get new Windows 10 licenses starting in February 2023 will be through other retailers like Amazon, or Best Buy. Microsoft will only allow you to buy Windows 11 through its own websites and fresh copies of Windows 10 won't be able to be activated through the Microsoft Website anymore for a $139 price for Windows 10 Home, or $199 for Windows 10 Pro.

For users running older unsupported Windows versions (stop doing that!), such as Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1, you can still upgrade to a digital license of Windows 10 for free, and if you have supported hardware, upgrade to Windows 11 if you wish.

On the Products tab, find the subscription for which you want to buy or remove licenses. Select the three dots (more actions), then select Buy licenses. What if I don't see the Buy licenses or Remove licenses buttons?

To buy or remove licenses, under New quantity in the Total licenses box, enter the total number of licenses that you want for this subscription. For example, if you have 100 licenses and you want to add five more, enter 105. If you want to remove five of them, enter 95.

Prepaid product licenses are issued to you as a 25-character alphanumeric code, called a product key. After you buy the licenses you need, you can add them to your subscription by using the steps below. You can also use a product key to extend the expiration date of your subscription.

If you don't want to buy a new product key, you can always choose to add a credit card or bank account to your subscription to pay for more licenses. For more information, see Renew your subscription.

The payment method associated with your subscription or billing profile is charged as soon as you buy more licenses for a subscription. The licenses are immediately available for you to assign to users.

If you prepaid for your subscription with a product key, you can add more licenses by using another product key, or by adding a credit or debit card, or bank account to cover the additional cost of the new licenses. If your subscription is prepaid, you can't remove licenses.

Windows 10 remains the most popular version of the Windows operating system in use today, but Microsoft is more than ready to move on. As Tom's Hardware reports(Opens in a new window), Microsoft intends to end sales of Windows 10 licenses through its website on Jan. 31.

A Windows 10 Home download license costs $139, while Windows 10 Pro costs $199.99. However, visiting either purchase page reveals a note stating, "January 31, 2023 will be the last day this Windows 10 download is offered for sale. Windows 10 will remain supported with security updates that help protect your PC from viruses, spyware, and other malware until October 14, 2025."

This decision doesn't mean new licenses for Windows 10 won't be available by other means, but Microsoft isn't going to offer arguably the easiest way to buy one anymore. You can, however, purchase a license for either Windows 11 Home(Opens in a new window) or Windows 11 Pro(Opens in a new window) in the same way and for the same price directly from Microsoft. By choosing Windows 11, your PC will be using an operating system that is still being actively developed and therefore has many more years of support ahead of it unlike Windows 10.

Windows 10 is slowly coming to an end, with one more way to purchase the operating system riding off into the sunset. Microsoft is posting notices in a variety of locations to confirm it will no longer sell Windows 10 licenses directly. Support remains in place for the time being, as is the usual strategy when an operating system is gradually phased out.

If you have a digital license, when Windows asks you for the product key, click Do this later to skip the step. As long as you connect to the internet at some point later, you won't be asked for it again.

Hey Kubar, Thanks for reaching out. It depends on your license agreement with Windows. Usually, it is one license on one device but the best would be if you check it again. Let us know if you have further questions. Thanks

Parallels 14 and Win 10 is installed within the administrator account of my MacBookPro. Now I would like to create a new account for other person on my MacBookPro, too. How can I create a new account for this person within parallels and how I could share one WIN 10 license, activated for the administrator on my MacBookPro?

Hey Ed, Parallels Desktop for Mac does not include Microsoft Windows. You can purchase Windows 10 using Parallels Desktop interface or just use any other Windows license you acquire. Read here for more information: Let us know if you have any further questions. Thanks 041b061a72
