NABS was founded in 1978 by Dr. Lawrence Zeleny in order to promote the preservation of bluebirds, a cavity-nesting species in decline. Larry, with the support of his wife, Olive dedicated much of his life to providing nestboxes and managing bluebird trails. He promoted bluebird conservation through hundreds of talks and articles in many periodicals.
Male eastern bluebird performing flight song(?) over parking lot near a bluebird box. Although this recording occurred approx. 30 minutes before sunrise and I could not see the bird against dark skies, I could tell it was singing in flight because the sound would move in a circular pattern over where I was standing. This can be heard slightly in the recording, as the song gets quieter when the bird moves further away.
This is a flock of bluebirds in a mixed maritime forest calling apparently to keep the flock or the family together. All birds seen - an indeterminate number - were in adult plumage. They were generally following one another from tree to tree as might be expected, although staying in a relatively small area.

two birds with some type of interaction, with different vocalizations after 0:10 to 0:20 and two types of song/call until one left at about 0:56, after which the remaining bird sang; from the crowns of 20 m conifers;
I am not sure this particular vocalization is known by many. At least Cornell University's extensive library of sounds does not have it to the best of my knowledge. It is a male reacting to a furry wind cover over a microphone in my 'bird garden'. The bluebird and his mate feed frequently on a tube of mealworms right next to the microphone, and he would not come in. I have never heard this before in this species. Note the thrush-like quality of the call note.
Western Bluebird songs tend to be a string of various call notes, particularly the kew note along with other stuttering or whistled notes. The result is a soft, hesitant song that can last 1-2 seconds.
If you like, Bluebird can provide you with an email address. This is optional; you can keep any email address you currently have, whether provider-based (comcast.com, bellsouth.net, etc.) or web-based (yahoo.com, gmail.com, etc.). There is no extra charge for a bluebirdwireless.com address.
Did you see that bright blue bird? The eye-catching blue bird is our native Western Bluebird. They are about 7 inches long and are common across much of the west. The adult male is deep blue with a blue throat and a rusty colored chest and the belly is blueish gray. The female colors are brownish gray with a gray throat and chest and dull blue on the wings and tail.
Q. How late in the year will bluebirds nest in Michigan?A. Bluebirds can still fledge in Michigan as late as mid-August, depending on the weather and food availability. Further north, such as the Upper Peninsula, this last fledging date could be 1 to 2 weeks earlier.
Q. Do Bluebirds leave Michigan in the Fall?A. Not completely. They WILL migrate south, out of the upper peninsula and northern 2/3 of the state (approximately). But, bluebirds commonly remain in large numbers all winter in the southern part of the lower peninsula. This may be due to milder weather in recent years and greater food availability. Things you can do to help them include feeding mealworms, leaving out several nest boxes for them to roost in, and providing a heated birdbath or water source.
Q. Are any nest box designs less attractive to house sparrows?A. First realize that despite lots of research, no nesting box design has been determined to deter all house sparrows in all cases. But, more recent research has been pointing to the fact that boxes with smaller nesting spaces in them seem to be less desirable to sparrows. In particular, the PVC Gilbertson nest box, Troyer nest box, and Gilwood designs have gotten encouraging results. See our page on bluebird nesting boxes for more information on these designs. You also can download plans for bluebird houses to build your own modified Gilwood house or Troyer box.
Q. I keep seeing a group of bluebirds in the yard. How can I tell which ones are juveniles and which are adult birds?A. Without exception, young bluebirds have spotting on the breast and underside, and also on the back. They also have a lot less blue than the adults. However, young bluebirds go through a feather molt in mid to late summer where they then lose the spotted feathers and gain their adult plumage. By fall, it will be difficult if not impossible to tell the difference between the younger and older birds.
Q. Is it true that bluebirds are easily attracted to birdbaths?A. Yes! Bluebirds are members of the thrush family (as are robins) and birds in this group seem to love to bathe and drink water in bird baths. You should provide a bird bath with shallow sloping sides and a rough surface to make it safer and easier for birds to enter the water. Also, place birdbaths away from low ground cover and shrubs where cats can lurk. And water can still be put out in the winter using a heated birdbath.
If you would like someone to do an interesting program on bluebirds for your group,contact MBS to schedule a day and time. We can do talks to nature groups, civic organizations, schools, gardenclubs, etc. in most areas of the state. Go to our Contact Us page, and send a message to the Coordinator for your county. If there is not one for your county, contact Kurt Hagemeister, MBS President.
In order to fill this void, several bluebird enthusiasts met to form the new Maryland Bluebird Society (MBS.) On March 7, 2004 the first meeting of MBS took place. Officers and Directors were elected and a website was created. From this small and humble beginning, an active program was launched for the conservation of the Eastern Bluebird and other native cavity-nesting species in Maryland.
Although western bluebirds form a monogamous pair during the breeding season, many bluebird nests contain young that the resident male did not father. A pair of western bluebirds may also have helpers at the nest, who are thought to be assisting their supposed parents after their nests have failed.
Western bluebirds can be found in open woodlands and woodland edges of clearings throughout the western U.S., central Mexico, and southwestern Canada. Look for them sitting low on a tree branch or a fencepost or watch them drop to the ground to feed on insects. Their songs are typically a series of kew call notes strung together. While breeding, western bluebirds are often seen with their mate, but during the winter, they often gather in same sex or mixed flocks to feed on insects or berries. More northern or high-elevation populations will migrate south or to lower elevations in the winter.

And the pair brings to life a touching song called Soar Like a Blue Bird.The tune is about an inexorable feeling, the desire of love. The driving sounds and the emotional tones are neatly combined to create a scene of a beautiful blue bird flying through mountains and valleys, elegantly and strongly. As the lyrical piano melodies come in, the emotion of desire goes uncontainable. Just like how a spread of wing can take our hearts along, the overflowing emotion shall let go of all the shackles, soar us to the sky and roam like a bird. $(".tralbum-about").last().bcTruncate(TruncateProfile.get("tralbum_about"), "more", "less"); lyrics If I can, I'll hold you in my armsIf I can, I will take you to another worldIf I can, I'll promise you my loveThat we will soar the sky like those blue birds $(".lyricsText").last().bcTruncate(TruncateProfile.get("tralbum_long"), "more", "less"); credits released July 15, 2022 Produced, mixed and mastered by Joulez:SC: soundcloud.com/joulezz TW: twitter.com/JavelinMaxx $(".tralbum-credits").last().bcTruncate(TruncateProfile.get("tralbum_long"), "more", "less"); license all rights reserved tags Tags electronic epic trance trance uplifting trance China Shopping cart subtotal USD taxes calculated at checkout Check out about Omniset Records China
