If you're hoping to buy the ice cream in a physical store and don't live in one of those cities, you're probably out of luck. Fortunately, there's another way to get your hand on some.

The mac and cheese ice cream will also be available for sale online. Both in store and online, the ice cream sells for $12 a pint, which isn't cheap, but where else are you going to get mac and cheese ice cream?

Mac and cheese may not seem like the most obvious flavor for ice cream, but the flavor profile is designed to hew closely to the flavor of actual mac and cheese, which means that it will be both creamy and cheesy. Van Leeuwen is a well-known artisanal ice cream brand based in Brooklyn, and they're known in part for creating ice cream with just a few key flavors, which is why Kraft chose them as a partner.

The ice cream goes on sale at 11 a.m. EST, and will be available until it's sold out. Those in New York City can try it for free, though, thanks to an ice cream truck that will be set up in Union Square between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. In other parts of the country, you'll have to order a pint online if you're curious about what it tastes like.

Listen, I wanted to like it. I really did. Before eating it, I saw several reviews say it was surprisingly good(Opens in a new tab). I am actually a gigantic fan of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, and I had a whole box for lunch literally last week. But putting the iconic neon orange cheese into ice cream was simply NOT IT, my friends. Here's why.

OK, so getting my hands on the actual ice cream was probably the best part of the experience. On launch day, Van Leeuwen parked a blue, Kraft-inspired ice cream truck in Union Square in New York to hand out free cups of ice cream to anyone passing by. When I showed up right after it opened, the line was already down the block.

When I cracked the pint open, I was greeted by the familiar orange hue, albeit a little duller than that of the original mac and cheese. If I didn't know that it was mac-and-cheese flavored, the color would probably lead me to believe it was some kind of citrusy ice cream, tangerine or mango maybe. Oh, how I wish that were the case.

The ingredient list was pretty short, technically just four ingredients: milk, cane sugar, egg yolks, and Kraft cheese sauce. The label said the orange color comes from turmeric and annatto added to the cheese sauce.

I will say this ice cream seemed to melt remarkably quickly. I took it out of the freezer for about five minutes before digging in, and there was a considerable amount of ice cream goop pooling around the edges. The center of the pint was still solid, but the melted part did look a lot like actual cheese sauce, which was... concerning.

I don't know if you've tried to smell ice cream before, but uh, ice cream does not have a smell. For some reason, I thought the cheese element would produce a smell, but I'm happy to report that mac and cheese ice cream is just like any other ice cream: scentless.

I'm sorry, but it really does. I so badly wanted to experience a magical salty-sweet explosion in my mouth, like so many other reviewers claimed to have tasted(Opens in a new tab). Instead, from the second the ice cream reached my lips, it tasted wrong.

It wasn't a complex, subtle flavor that combined the best parts of mac and cheese and ice cream. It tasted, to me, like vanilla ice cream with Kraft cheese powder sprinkled on top. It tasted like what I imagine snorting an entire package of the cheese powder would taste like.

"It kinda tastes like nacho cheese in a cardboard pint. I would literally rather stuff my face with Cheez Whiz from a can than this." -Brenda Stolyar, fellow Mashable reporter who I forced to try this with me.

The companies "wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with," said Emily Violett, senior associate brand manager for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, in a news release.

"It is definitely cheesy," said Eater writer Amy McCarthy on NPR's Morning Edition. "It's a little funky, a little salty, a little sweet. But altogether I'd just say it just kind of comes together. It's very creamy and buttery and it's a lot better than you think it's gonna be."

To create the creamy treat, Van Leeuwen churned the familiar, cheesiness of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese into their ice cream made with only a few ingredients. The result? A cool, creamy scoop of ice cream that brings that comforting, nostalgic feeling from a warm bowl of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.

The Kraft Macaroni & Cheese ice cream will be available online for order on while supplies last at a cost of $12 for a pint starting at 11am ET on July 14. The limited-edition flavor will also be available at all Van Leeuwen stores across the country (NYC, LA & Houston) starting July 14 while supplies last. New Yorkers can also try the ice cream for free while supplies last at an ice cream truck stationed in Union Square on July 14 only from 11am-6pm.

People were lined up down the street outside of the special truck covered in Van Leeuwen and Kraft logos when I arrived. The line moved quickly, though, because the ice cream was passed out for free.

When I got my cup of ice cream, I immediately noticed its bright-yellow hue. It was instantly recognizable, as it was the same color as the cheesy powder that comes in a box of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, though the texture was wildly different.

The first bite tasted exactly like a spoonful of smooth Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. It was a bit surprising at first to consume the taste of mac and cheese in a frozen form, but it was comforting and delicious in a way I didn't expect.

However, the cheese-filled ice cream was incredibly rich, so I found myself feeling full after just a few bites. I often have the same experience when eating fudge or cheesecake ice creams, which I reserve for the winter months since they're not as refreshing as lighter flavors of ice cream. 041b061a72
